Crooked Little Heart Chapter Four
Waking with a jolt as she heard a baby crying Avery opened her eyes as she looked around the room she was in. Raising an eyebrow she felt her heart began to beat faster. This wasn't the bedroom she had fallen asleep in. It wasn't the room she had been sharing with Taylor on and off since Jonah was a baby...and why the hell was there a baby still crying?
Getting out of bed she cursed to herself as she stepped on a lego. Just death glaring it silently for a minute she took a deep breath and left the unknown bedroom as she walked towards where the cries where coming from. As she did so it became apparent to her that this house wasn't one she knew or even remembered so how in the fuck how in the fuck had she wound up here?
When she reached the room where the cries were coming from she again raised an eyebrow as she looked at the door which was cracked and she swore she also heard a man talking on the other side but Taylor wasn't home yet. He hadn't been gone a full week just yet so who was on the other side of the door where she could still hear a faint cry from a baby?
Taking a deep breath Avery opened the cracked door and stopped in her tracks when she saw Zac sitting in a rocking chair holding a brunette child in his arms. It was then Avery realized she had to be dreaming. She just had to be even though this felt too real for a dream.
"Zac?" she asked her voice coming out as barely even a whisper but it was loud enough to make the man who she dreaded seeing, turn his head to give her a sleepy looking smile.
"Did Owen wake you?" Zac asked as he raised an eyebrow to look at Avery who was now standing in the doorway. "I wanted to get him before you he could wake you and Stelly but I guess I failed huh?"
Avery looked at Zac confused when he asked her if Owen had woke her and that he had wanted to get to him before he could wake her or Stelly up. "Owen?" she asked feeling as if she was in some horrible dream.
Zac returned Avery's confused look before nodding, "Our son that you gave birth to five months ago," he informed her as he laughed softly before looking down at the boy in his arms, "It seems mommy has forgotten you Owen."
Shaking her head Avery did the math in her head. Five months ago she had given birth to a stillborn baby boy named Jackson not a living healthy baby named Owen and the baby she had given birth too had not been Zac's. That baby was Taylor's.
"I did give birth in September but that baby was dead Zac," she sighed before shaking her head again. This was a horrible nightmare and she needed to wake up fast. "His name was Jackson and he was dead," she repeated knowing there had to be some mistake. There was no Owen and she hadn't been pregnant by Zac again.
Zac looked up at Avery his confusion getting worse now, "Ave baby five months ago was July not September."
Staring at Zac, Avery again shook her head, "It's March," she stated knowing she couldn't have possibly missed that many months.
"No, it's December. Two weeks from Christmas and our anniversary," Zac informed her wondering if his wife was losing her mind now. How could she have forgot their son and what month it was?
Avery felt her eyes widen at Zac's newest words, "I wouldn't have married you on Jonah's birthday," she said as she shook her head. "I wouldn't have married you period to be honest," she sighed knowing that if she had married him after all the shit he had put her through then she had probably lost her mind.
Feeling hurt by Avery's words Zac looked down at Owen again, "Well you did marry me on Jonah's birthday. You married me three years ago on Christmas and I don't know how you have seemingly forgotten that or our son that you gave birth to in July. Did you forget Stella too?"
"No I didn't forget Stella," Avery said as Zac's words took on a bitter tone. She wasn't sure she could handle all of this. What the fuck was happening? How had she went to sleep in March and woken up in December to another life that clearly wasn't hers. "I think I need to go back to bed," she whispered as she turned to leave the room though the moment she got turned around she felt herself get lightheaded before everything went black.

Sitting in the waiting room of the hospital Zac ran a hand through his hair. Avery had been here for two hours now, ever since she had fainted in the doorway of Owen's nursery. He had called 911 after putting Owen down in the crib and he had hated that he couldn't ride in the ambulance with Avery but he had to take Stella and Owen to his mom's and then he had called Taylor who had the boys to let him know that Avery may not be picking them up today. It was after he had called Taylor that he had finally arrived and since arriving he had been told to wait in the waiting room. Apparently Avery who was now awake didn't even want to see him though she had requested to see Taylor and Zac had again called Taylor telling him to get to the hospital.
"Zac?" a voice spoke which brought Zac out of his thoughts and he looked up seeing Taylor walking towards him. "How is she?"
Zac just shrugged his shoulders as he stood up and walked towards his wife's ex-husband, "I have no clue. They won't tell me much and according to the doctors she refuses to see me but she wants to see you."
Taylor crinkled his forehead some hearing that Avery wanted to see him, "She wants to see me?" he asked as he shook his head. "I mean we haven't really been civil towards each other since the divorce and she knows we only tolerate each other because of the kids."
"I know that," Zac muttered as he looked at Taylor. "But something is off with Avery. It's like she woke up today and she's not the woman I married three years ago. She didn't remember Owen or even marrying me. She thought it was still March and she mentioned something about giving birth to a baby named Jackson in September but the baby had died."
"Did she take anything before bed?" Taylor asked almost wanting to laugh at this situation even if it wasn't funny. He had never known his ex-wife to be that messed up even if she had destroyed their marriage. She had always been sane.
Zac shook his head, "Not that I know of," he sighed. "Just go see her since she wants to see you," he said feeling angry that she had wanted to see Taylor over him. Taylor was the man she had left to be with him and now it seemed like Avery had forgotten their life together. A life they had built after she had came out to California and told him about her pregnancy, told him about the baby that they were going to have. It had been Stella who brought them together for good.
Nodding Taylor got the room number from Zac. Once he had it he left the man in the waiting room as he went to go see Avery. He hadn't been alone with her in a room since the weekend she found out about her baby. It had been that weekend he realized his marriage was done. She had lied to him about having sex with Zac and then she had went after Zac to tell him about her pregnancy. A move that signified to Taylor she had moved on, she no longer loved him and so he too had moved on and somehow during that he had let his bitterness take over and he and Avery had stopped even being friends. They were just two people who shared children.
Zac watched Taylor walk off and he walked back to the chairs and sat down. He could only hope that speaking with Taylor would help Avery and maybe eventually she'd snap out of whatever weird fantasy she seemed to be in. He just wanted his wife back.

Sitting in her hospital bed Avery heard the door to her room open and the moment she saw Taylor step in her room she grinned. She was finally seeing someone she loved and a person who she trusted. She was seeing her husband and the man she remembered being married too.
"I was afraid Zac wouldn't call you," Avery confessed as she chewed her lip. "I was even more afraid you wouldn't make it back from Arizona the same day. I know how important this conference was to you."
Taylor looked at Avery as she talked too and he was confused by her words. He hadn't been in Arizona, hell he had never went to Arizona either especially not for any conference. Now he could see and really believe what Zac had meant about something being wrong with Avery.
"I wasn't in Arizona," Taylor told her as he went to the chair in her room and sat down. "I was at home with my wife," he said wondering if she even remembered that he was remarried as well
"Your wife?" Avery asked feeling her voice crack some. "But I'm your wife Taylor," she said not understanding how things had changed overnight. "We got married again two months after Stella was born. We've been together since then and I think I'd know if you had another wife."
Taylor gave Avery a look as she continued stating her delusions, "Avery we never got remarried," he told her as he corrected her. "You found out you were pregnant with Stella and you went after the man you love. You told Zac and you got him back. I moved on and eventually married Natalie last year."
Avery shook her head at Taylor's words not wanting to believe what he said was true. But the more she saw the weird looks he gave her the more she knew that whatever dream world she had woken up in, Taylor was married to Natalie in it and she was with Zac, a man who she hated for leaving her and now found somewhat creepy after he had forced himself on her.
"I'm sorry Ave," Taylor nodded as he stood from the chair and walked to the door. "I really should go though and you really should let your husband be the one back here with you."
"But you are my husband," Avery whispered softly as she watched Taylor leave the room. Looking down at her hands she felt tears in her eyes. She wasn't sure how she had wound up in this weird messed up reality but she wanted out. She wanted out of here and fast. She wanted to go back to Taylor and the world where he was her husband even if she had been mad at him not answering his phone. She wanted to go back to the world where Zac didn't know about Stella being his.
Waking with a jolt as she heard a baby crying Avery opened her eyes as she looked around the room she was in. Raising an eyebrow she felt her heart began to beat faster.
